Beyond AI Slop: Why Great T-Shirt Design Needs a Human Touch

AI can generate a T-shirt design in seconds. Mountains, vintage lettering, roaring animals, distressed graphics—you name it. The problem? Many of these designs look so similar that it's hard to tell one from another.

Between Chat GBT and Google Gemini, key features of a 1956 Belair seem to be hard to get right. Notice things like headlight are disproportionately too large. The car is taller and narrower than an actual car. Molding and trims are not correct to the year or model. These are things that a real person and car enthusiast will notice.

They might look good or “good enough” at first glance, but often lack originality, thoughtful composition, and the personal details that make a design memorable.

A good design shouldn't just look trendy or "fine." It should inspire, move and draw in the viewer.

The Problem With Generic Designs

AI-generated designs often rely on familiar formulas. For a car show, that might mean another muscle car surrounded by flames and checkered flags. For an outdoor brand, it's another mountain scene with distressed lettering.

There's nothing wrong with these elements when they're used with purpose. The problem is when a design feels like a template or an overused formula instead of something created specifically for the customer.

AI compositions and elements follow a formula when creating layouts and even the car. Above are 3 different renders from 3 different sources online. Note that there are repeated patterns of reflections and even trim mistakes. Also AI doesn’t know what is a current motto verses a motto from 1956. AI Car show art often has the car going in the same direction and even the same or vety similar position. Your design deserves better.

Great design takes more than assembling graphics and text. It needs a clear focal point, balanced spacing, readable lettering, and elements that work together. Most importantly, it should reflect the personality of the business, team, or event behind it.

A car show shirt might feature a specific vehicle or local landmark. A team graphic can capture the personality of its players. A business design can communicate what makes that company different.

Those personal details turn a generic graphic into something distinctive.

AI can help brainstorm ideas, but a generated image is just a starting point—not a guarantee of good design. An experienced artist brings creative judgment to the process, knowing what to add, what to simplify, and how to make the finished design feel intentional.

Great Artwork Must Work on the Shirt

Even an attractive design can run into problems during production. Fine lines may disappear, small lettering may become unreadable, and complicated artwork may need simplifying. Colors and details also need to work with the garment and chosen decoration method.

At Eugene Silkscreen, our award winning in-house art and production teams work together to prepare artwork for custom screen printing and embroidery. We help customers refine designs so they look good on screen and translate well to the finished product.

Since 1985, we've helped businesses, schools, sports teams, and event organizers bring their ideas to life. Sometimes a project starts with a polished logo. Other times, it's a rough sketch or an idea that needs a little direction.

That's where collaboration makes a difference.

Make Something That's Unmistakably Yours
